Curriculum Philosophy

Research has shown children learn best through play and their daily experiences. It is our goal to offer children the freedom to try out new ideas, practice developing skills and imitate adult roles, as well as to learn social skills and develop friendships.

As children play and explore the classroom, outdoor or community environment, teachers will watch and listen for children’s ideas about their exploration. Teachers and parents interactions with the children help them expand on their ideas. This may involve short-term or expanded activity depending upon the children’s varying needs and interests. Children may develop an interest in caterpillars while being read a book about caterpillars. Teachers will expand on this interest by developing a curriculum about caterpillars; this could include art, science, dramatic play or exploring local parks.

Since we serve infant – preschool we need to be aware of developmentally appropriate practice. Bead lacing is an appropriate fine motor activity for a preschooler, but for a toddler we would provide them with the opportunity to bead using larger objects, such as beads made from cardboard rolls, babies could use the same cardboard “beads” with a basket putting them in and out of the basket. We take the same approach to art for children. For younger children the process is the learning experience, not the finished product.

Our goal is for teachers to plan activities and take advantage of opportunities for children to work and play together in order to learn to get along with others and feel good about themselves. This will positively affect their learning in the future. They are offered opportunities for training, and encouraged to use this information to guide them when working with the children and their families.

Classrooms are arranged into interest areas (for example) housekeeping and blocks. These areas offer the child a variety of learning opportunities and making choices. It is the goal of the staff to update and use these areas as teaching and learning tools. Teachers organize areas to give the children an opportunity for self-initiated as well as teacher initiated play.

It is our goal that our approach supports child development by meeting the child’s basic needs, supports and encourages children to engage in activities that allow them to expand their imaginations. The staff are able to supervise children at play without interrupting their play. Further, it is our desire to make parents and guardians feel welcome.
